Why are foodways important?

Foodways is the study of what people eat and why. Why we procure, prepare and serve the food we do has cultural, sociological, geographical, financial and political influences.

 

 

Why is recognition of diverse foodways valuable?

Preserving our past and present for the future by research, documentation and oral histories. It is culinary anthropology on the hoof, paw, root and leaf.

Alexander Hamilton was not just a powerful Founding Father, he was also a loving husband and father, a flirtatious brother-in-law, and an incorrigible lady-killer. In this new living-history portrayal, meet the real Schuyler sisters who captivated Hamilton:

 

  • His wife, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton,
  • Her sister, the charming, witty Angelica Schuyler Church,
  • Her other sister, high-spirited Peggy Schuyler van Rensselaer.

 

Actress and scholar Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., brings these smart, beautiful women to life as they discuss their complicated relationships with Hamilton and the other men in their lives. You don’t need to have seen the smash hit musical Hamilton to enjoy this, but if you have, it’ll bring the history behind the show alive!

 

Leslie Goddard M.A., Ph.D., is an award winning actress and scholar who has been presenting history lectures and portraying famous women in history for more than 10 years.

 

Goddard holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, specializing in U.S. cultural history, American studies, and women’s history as well as a master’s degree in theater and in museum studies.  A former museum director, she is the author of two books: Remembering Marshall Fields and Chicago’s Sweet Candy History.  She currently works full time as a historical interpreter, author and public speaker.

 

Our tables seat 10 guests.  We will do our very best to arrange you are seated with your friends.  Information on seating is available after purchase.

 

An early bird boutique will feature jewelry, hats, purses and accessories.

 

 

A live auction will be conducted to benefit Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance’s State Fair Family Heirloom project.
